Collection: Retinol Done RIght
Retinol is part of a class of chemicals called “retinoids” (vitamin A derivatives) that has long been considered one of the best topical ingredients in treating the signs of aging, (wrinkles, loss of firmness, rough texture) as well as skin conditions like acne.
It works by speeding up skin cell turnover to reveal smoother, brighter skin, stimulating collagen production to improve skin elasticity and regulating oil production to reduce acne flare ups.
Retinol is considered one of the most gentle and commonly used form of retinoid and is often used as shorthand to refer to any strength of retinoid Retinal is a stronger form, and works up to 11 times faster than retinol, while retinoic esters are the most gentle and least potent. However, all forms can cause irritation - like dryness, flakiness, redness, and increased sun sensitivity. A gradual introduction of any form is recommended, as well as use of a sunscreen.
Retinol (referring to all retinoids here) has long been a part of western skincare, but have become only recently more prevalent in Korean skincare due to concerns about its harshness.
Korean brands are now including retinol more and more, often in low concentrations or along with ingredients like ceramides to protect the skin barrier, centella asiatica to soothe inflammation and hyaluronic acid and panthenol or other humectants to offset any harsh effects.
In choosing a retinol product here are some tips to consider:
- Read all product directions carefully and go slow. Introducing a potent retinol to skin too quickly can cause discomfort and irritation.
- For retinol, 0.1% (1,000 parts per million) is often considered a good starting point.
- If using a stronger form like retinal, a good starting point is considered to be below 0.1%.
- Always patch test first to avoid irritation or reaction.
- Book end your retinol between soothing, hydrating and moisturizing products like toners, essences, serums and moisturizers to offset any harshness.
- Use at night with soothing products to allow your skin to regenerate.
- And sunscreen always during the day, even if using retinol at night. Any retinol product will weaken skin’s defense against UVA/UVB rays.
