Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that has long been considered one of the best topical ingredients in treating the signs of aging, like fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skintone, as well as acne. 

It works by speeding up skin cell turnover to reveal smoother, brighter skin and stimulate the production of collagen which helps to firm skin. 

Retinol can be a strong ingredient and can cause initial irritation, redness, and increased sun sensitivity. A gradual introduction to skin is recommended, as well as use of a sunscreen if using retinol in the day. 

Retinol has long been a part of western skincare, but only recently more prevalent in Korean skincare due to concerns about its harsh effect on skin.

Korean brands are now including retinol more and more, often in low concentrations or along with ingredients like ceramides to protect the skin barrier, centella asiatica to soothe inflammation and hyaluronic acid or other emollients to moisturize and hydrate skin. 

In choosing a retinol product, it is important to read the directions carefully and go slow. Introducing a potent retinol to skin too quickly can cause discomfort and irritation.
