Polydeoxyribonucleotide, or PDRN, is the latest buzzy skincare ingredient to help address the signs of aging. 

Derived from salmon DNA, which is compatible with human DNA, it stimulates adenosine receptors in our skin to better heal wounds and scarring, reduce inflammation and suppress pigmentation. PDRN also stimulates collagen production, which helps to restore skin's firmness and reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles. PDRN can also be derived from plants, such as ginseng and roses. 

Once reserved as a post surgical treatment to help heal skin, or as injectible by trained medical professionals, it is now being formulated for topical skincare. 

Is it truly transformative? There is clinical evidence to support PDRN's ability to reduce the signs of aging, more so as an injectible. One concern regarding topical use is that the PDRN molecule is too large to penetrate skin's protective barrier. 

But brands are working to reduce the molecular size of PDRN and are combining it with delivery systems like spicules (similar to microneedling) or exosomes (cell communicators) to enhance penetration into skin. 

And PDRN has also been shown to boost the effectiveness of other ingredients that are good for skin, like hyaluronic acid (hydration), niacinamide (brightness) and antioxidants (Vitamins B, C and E).
